About this edition

This site carries प्रतिष्ठित क़ुरआन — “the Noble Qur’ān, a coherent Hindi translation” — a Hindi rendering of Javed Ahmad Ghamidi’s Urdu translation al-Bayān, made by Mushfiq Sultan. The translation is not yet published in print.

The text is arranged the way Ghamidi reads the Book: seven chapters, each opening with sūrahs revealed in Makkah and closing with sūrahs revealed in Madīnah, the sūrahs themselves set out in pairs. Every chapter carries its theme and introduction, and every pair of sūrahs its own.

The Hindi uses Sanskrit-derived vocabulary in place of the Persian and Arabic terms a Muslim reader would expect — परमेश्वर for Allāh, for instance. The translator sets out his reasons in the front matter, on the basis that every messenger is sent in the language of his own people.

Each passage links to the same passage in the English edition, so the two can be read side by side. The Arabic text can be shown or hidden with the ع button.
